Sniper Elite: Resistance Review – IS THIS THE BEST SNIPER GAME EVER MADE?

Sniper Elite Resistance is exactly what you would expect if you have played any of the previous entries in the series. However, does its new features and environments do enough make it a standout title?

Blasting through the missions

The Sniper Elite series has never really been known for its narrative, and Resistance is no exception. The story is the stereotypical “fight back against the Germans in WW2” plot that has become all too familiar in this series. That’s not to say that the story is bad, but it’s definitely not the reason to play a Sniper Elite game! Each level begins with the classic mission briefing and then summary at the end, which basically boils down to “you have to kill this target and find this information” “Good job killing this target and finding this information.” Though this time round, finding and helping the French resistance is the focal point of this entry. Honestly, whilst it is intriguing, some of the French accents just sound a bit off… Also, I can’t help but think that Harry Hawker kind of sound like Jason Statham…

The satisfying gunplay in Sniper Elite: Resistance

Sniper Elite Resistance brings back the familiar tropes that fans of the series have come to know and love. The sniping mechanics are just as satisfying as you would expect, with the x-ray cameras making each kill more brutal than ever. The core gameplay itself doesn’t bring any new surprises with it! Picking up a rifle in 1944 France and popping off Nazis feels just as satisfying as ever. Resistance offers multiple approaches to succeed in a mission, whether that be sniping from afar, getting up close and personal, or being a ghost and not leaving a trace, but the end result is always fairly similar.

Moving around the map feels great, even if climbing is occasionally a little janky. Each new area bringing its own unique layout, which creates new vantage points, and new challenges. Admittedly, there is not much replay value in the main missions. If you take your time, you will be able to get everything out of each level on your first playthrough. Most collectibles are pretty easy to find, and if you are happy to spend roughly 30-40 minutes in each of the nine main missions to finish every objective, you’ll be done with the main campaign in around 6-7 hours.

The most intense part of Sniper Elite: Resistance

A lot of the fun in these missions comes from the Axis Invasion feature, which was first introduced in Sniper Elite 5. If you leave this feature on whilst playing through a mission, another player can invade your game as an enemy soldier known as the Sniper Jager. This can create a lot of tension, as you will go from calmly and methodically planning your way through a mission, to a sudden frantic rush to find (or avoid) an invading sniper. This added a level of challenge to the game, especially with how easily the other player can blend in, so you have to be a lot more attentive once you get that alert.

The sniper duels between myself and invading players was one of my highlights…

The sniper duels between myself and invading players was one of my highlights in my time with Sniper Elite Resistance! It forced me to change my tactics on the fly and approach new areas with extra caution. With the areas being more open as well, cross map fire fights are much more possible! This helped create some really tense moments out on the battlefield.

It can be frustrating being set back to a much earlier checkpoint after getting eliminated by the Sniper Jager! However, that feeling of elation after getting a one up on the invader, far outweighs the negatives. The Axis Invasion feature is optional! So if you find it too stressful, you can always turn it off. On the other hand, if you did enjoy it, and you want to cause other players a bit of grief, you can become the invading sniper yourself and cause a bit of havoc. It’s a bit of fun, until you come up against a really tough opponent!

The Other Game Modes

The Survival game mode makes a return in Resistance, pitting you once again, against waves of Nazi soldiers. This well established horde mode is a bit of fun, if you want to put your quick draw sniping skills to the test. However, it is the new Propaganda game mode that really piqued my interest. The concept here is to use a fixed loadout to kill a certain amount of enemies within a timeframe. This shakes up the patient, quiet approach that you have gotten used to. Instead, it forces you to rush to complete the objective. This game mode can be a bit of fun. Though the very slim time limit quickly makes it feel like a chore. Even if you go guns blazing, you will have to cover the entire map very quickly to kill all the enemies.

You will only get rewarded with extra time by getting ghost kills. This basically means getting a kill whilst not being spotted, hunted or being shot at. Also, your target has to be completely unaware of you. In theory, this sounds simple enough… However, with the level of speed required to succeed in a propaganda mission, it is very, very difficult to be undetected. But on the off chance that you do manage to remain undetected, even if you sneak up on an enemy right from behind and eliminate them, for some reason they will become aware of you (not necessarily even firing back at you) but aware enough so that even successfully eliminating them won’t count as a ghost kill… This made the propaganda missions feel more tedious than enjoyable. Honestly, this became my least favourite game mode in Sniper Elite Resistance.

Competitive Multiplayer is still fun!

The online competitive game modes make a return once again, but with a load of new, more open maps. Much like in the campaign mode, this makes those cross map firefights much more frequent. So, trying to sneak around the areas can become a lot more intense. The good news is, there aren’t too many vantage points that are overpowered either! If an enemy player decides to camp up on the high ground, they can become an easy target. So having the high ground is not always advantageous! The multiplayer can feel a little unbalanced at times, especially when matched in a cross play lobby. Though, it’s still a fun way to let off some steam if you enjoy a bit of PvP.

Visuals and Performance

Sniper Elite Resistance is definitely a good looking game. It is by no means a graphical masterpiece., but the devs have definitely done enough to make it look like a current gen release. There are a few moments of texture pop in that can get a little annoying, and to be a super annoyingly nitpicky reviewer, I also did notice that there were the occasional jagged edges around different objects, which just hurt the presentation of the game a little. They are few and far between, but unfortunately, they are very noticeable and can be distracting when they occur.

Playing on PS5, I found that Sniper Elite Resistance runs quite comfortably at 60 FPS. Aside from the previously mentioned texture glitches, the game’s performance has been relatively flawless. There have been no unnecessary load times or frame drops, and the game itself runs pretty smoothly. So, if you can look past the occasional texture glitch here or there, then you won’t have to worry about the game’s performance for the PS5!

Decision

Sniper Elite Resistance is yet another entertaining entry in this Nazi Slaughter Simulator series. Despite delving straight back into the same formula without much significant deviation, Resistance manages to be a brutally addictive third person shooter. Whilst there are a few technical drawbacks on PS5, that won’t stop you from being immersed, as you traverse through France shooting first and asking questions later. Here’s just hoping that the next Sniper Elite manages to step out of the well worn WW2 era.

Great

Sniper Elite Resistance delivers familiar, satisfying sniping gameplay with brutal x-ray kills and multiple mission approaches. Though its narrative remains a typical WWII storyline, Axis Invasions add significant tension and excitement through player-versus-player sniper duels. While the new Propaganda mode feels tedious, the competitive multiplayer and returning Survival mode offer enjoyable alternatives. Despite minor graphical glitches, the game runs smoothly on PS5, making it a solid, albeit predictable, entry in the series.
