These days, gamers have never had so much choice. While it’s contributed to gaming’s undoubted growth, it has also resulted in there being arguably too many options. As many reviews suggest, certain genres consistently outperform others.
Likewise, some genres are avoided by gamers as they’re simply too frustrating to tackle. A common sentiment is worth noting: just because a specific category of gaming tends to infuriate gamers more than others, it doesn’t mean it should be avoided. First up is a genre that has almost certainly left you stuck at some stage. Puzzle games are designed to be complex and challenging. As such, it’s only natural that gamers would be frustrated at times, with strategies occasionally failing and errors meaning they have to go right back to the beginning. Puzzle games can also be highly rewarding, though, especially when a player finally comes up with a solution to a seemingly never-ending problem. Overall, it’s a genre that still draws many players in.
Metroidvania
Titles like Castlevania can be a huge pain at times, although the Metroidvania genre still has a massive community of gamers behind it. Not only can gamers enjoy its exploratory formula, but there are also other elements that provide plenty of pain, coupled with strong doses of pleasure, when players eventually make progress. From their intense combat systems to the various challenges players have to overcome, the Metroidvania genre definitely frustrates gamers.
Rhythm
Somewhat understandably, rhythm games appear to be all the rage these days. They’ve evolved to become far more than just the tapping products they used to be, with players now being able to dance to the beat and more. While they can be fun, they can also be a highly frustrating offerings, though. Most people struggle to nail them, they’ll work up a sweat while trying to do so, and they’re a huge challenge overall.
JRPG
Even though we’ve witnessed some top-notch titles shine in the JRPG space, games in this area can be incredibly frustrating to play at times. As seen with many games from the 1980s, titles from this era are usually tough and they’re a tad obnoxious in certain scenarios. Overall, though, because many titles in the genre allow you to choose the difficultly level, it’s up to you how much pain you want to bring to proceedings. Like so many genres in this article, though, it’s definitely highly satisfying when you do finally manage to come out the other side.
Survival
Survival games can be great, but there are some titles where a lack of clear goals makes them an annoying proposition. For example, being stuck and running out of things to do in Subnautica isn’t a rarity. Likewise, games in this space have a strong resource management aim, but if a player isn’t stocked up, then all of their progress can be undone in an instant. Of course, that’s the aim of survival games and why they’re so alluring for many, but the fact they also don’t offer clear goals can become tiresome after a while.
